It is a Category II listed building. The foundation stone was laid on December 22nd, 1871. The new building was designed by "Jeffery and Skiller" in the Gothic Revival style and built by "Joseph Bull & Sons". There was a "Gillett & Bland" quarter chime clock in the tower. Statues of local historical figures were placed at the front of the building on the second floor. The building was officially opened on May 18th, 1873 by the Lord Chancellor, "Earl of Selborne".
