Construction of the cathedral began on September 30th, 1868, and 51 years later, in 1919, the cathedral was completed. "St. Colman's Cathedral Cobh" is the second largest place of worship in the Republic of Ireland. It is a three-aisled basilica with a cross floor plan, which is closely based on models of the French cathedral Gothic.
