Its existence is not certain and is derived solely from the foundations of the later monastery. It is certain that a Romanesque church building was built around the year 1190. New monastery complexes were then built north of the church, the existence of which emerges from a papal entry from 1203. It was probably built only a short time before by Benedictine monks. What is unusual is that the monastery is located north of the church. The water supply is probably the background to this rare arrangement. Only a few years later, an Augustinian nunnery, the "Iona Nunnery", was built south of the complex. Further buildings were added in the 13th century and around 1420. |
