Location Arnol (Island part of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, United Kingdom), Blackhouse museum
Comment 03:05 p.m. - We had booked a tour of historical sights and had just arrived in Arnol - detailed information about the Blackhouses can be found in "Wikipedia" - here just the following: while the underlying design of the blackhouses may seem to have a direct lineage dating back to Orkney's Skara Brae, 5,000 years ago, most were not as old as you might think. This blackhouse used as the museum was built as recently as 1875. And in 1960 there were still nine blackhouses in use in Arnol: while the group now restored as the blackhouse village at Gearrannan, further along the coast, was only abandoned in 1974.
