Location Hamburg Port, near the Hamburg-St. Pauli piers
Comment view on the river cruise ship Mona Lisa. The sandy building on the left is the northern elevator building of the "old Elbe tunnel". In 2011 the "old Elbe tunnel" celebrated its 100th anniversary. It was opened on September 7th 1911 for pedestrian traffic and in November 1911 for horse-drawn vehicles and motor vehicles. It was regarded as a technical sensation when it opened, amongst others because the vehicles don't use ramps, but elevators to reach the two tunnel sections. The 427 m long tunnel, which connects "St. Pauli" with "Steinwerder", is a historical monument since 2003.
