| Comment | the military installations on "Vestervågen" - during the Cold War "Vardø" played an important rule as part of the early warning system of the NATO. The domes of the radars, which dominate the picture of the town, also served for civilian purposes. Since 1998 a radar station named "Globus II" exists in "Vardø". The official task is the tracking of space debris, but beyond that task this "X-band radar" is also responsible for the National Missile Defense of the United States. |
