Location at each passing point of Kiel canal
Additional Comment The Kiel Canal (NOK) is a narrow waterway. For this reason, there are a number of passing points, canal widenings distributed over the canal, in which ship encounters are possible, which are not permitted on the open waterway. For this purpose, the ships are scaled in 6 sonamed traffic groups (VG), depending on length, width and draught and the passing points are equipped with a corresponding signal system. The offered scan shows the different passing point signals and their significance (unfortunately only in German language). Please note: in the western part of Kiel canal (between Brunsbuettel and the passing point Schuelp) ships may pass up to "VG 8" in summary, in contrast in the eastern part of Kiel canal (between the passing point Schuelp and Holtenau) currently only up to "VG 6". In this case only one example: the signal "STOP for vessels of VG 3 and larger" in the western part means, that a ship of "VG 6" is sailing in opposite direction and has to pass inside the passing point. In a similar situation in the eastern part the signal "STOP for all vessels" would appear.
